mmNikos Alexiou. The Collection
In 2010, a few months before he passed away, Nikos Alexiou (1960-2011) donated to the Benaki Museum his rich contemporary art collection that he created with great dedication and patience, along with his artistic work. It is a unique set of artworks by contemporary Greek and foreign artists, which reveals a special aspect of Alexiou’s multifaceted activity, that redefined the artistic practices in Greece in the late 20th and early 21st century, with a long-lasting impact.
The exhibition presents this donation, introducing it as part of the artist's own practice but also as an example of an artist-collector capable of contributing not only to the reflection on the artistic production of twenty years (1990-2010) but also to the creation of existential worlds and unexpected constellations of meaning.
The corpus of these 236 works by eighty-four artists can also be understood as an "open work" that Alexiou constantly rearranged in his places of residence, multiplying synapses and narratives.
This ensemble is governed by certain recognizable characteristics: a preference for the minor event or gesture, craftsmanship and fleeting personal traces, an obsession with paper, transparency and lightness, an interest in the relationship of line to space, webs and grids, a delicate balance between disorder and order and, above all, a prominent attitude of artistic solidarity. All those things that we could call a passion for creating and interweaving worlds (referring to the Greek dia-kosmos, meaning ornament but also – literally- inter-world).
The multi-layered and at the same time imperfect character of the Collection makes it a functional unity and proposes a tactile and physical experience emerging from a special in situ installation in collaboration with the architectural office AREA.

GUIDO WEVERS ONTMOET ELENI KAMMA

mmWOMEN, together
The exhibition WOMEN, together is the first rehang of the museum’s collection in its permanent home, the former FIX brewery, since the initial presentation in 2019.
To address a major issue confronting all museums today: the under-representation of women and the urgency regarding gender equality – one of the main shared concerns underlying all ‘waves’ of feminism over the years, no matter how different – EMΣΤ has decided to make a bold statement with this exhibition and highlight exclusively the work of women artists in its collection.
Curated by Katerina Gregos and Eleni Koukou, WOMEN, together features works from EMΣΤ’s collection, including the first presentation of a number of works from the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift to EMΣΤ, the most important and generous donation in the museum’s history.
There are a total of 49 works by 25 artists of different generations, ten of which are Greek. Twelve artists and 24 works are from the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift, while twelve artists and 25 works are from the existing collection of ΕΜΣΤ. The exhibition also includes seven new acquisitions, as well as a new long-term loan of a major work by Etel Adnan(Lebanon), courtesy of the Saradar Collection (Paris/Beirut).

mmMERCI FACTEUR ! MAIL ART #6
mmJANELAS + AGATHE ERISTOV GENGIS KHAN

23.09.2023-07.01.2024
Janelas (“windows” in Portuguese) is an initiative by artist Marc Buchy (Metz, 1988) and curator and writer Tiago de Abreu Pinto (Salvador de Bahia, 1984), launched during the pandemic. It involved sending a series of window envelopes to over 70 artists of 25 different nationalities living in 17 countries. Each envelope contained an invitation to participate, following a specific protocol: use the inside of the envelope so that the only space to show work was the “window”. This Mail art process has led artists to experiment with the materiality, spatiality, visibility, humour, political dimension and dissidence of this type of work.
Agathe Eristov Gengis Khan (Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1948 – Paris, 2015) is a French artist who, throughout her career, has developed the practice of mail art alongside painting, drawing and collage. She corresponded with the likes of Gilbert Lascault and Agnès Varda on a very frequent basis. During the last two years of her life, she fostered extensive dialogue with one of her Belgian friends, Guylaine Liétaert, who had previously studied her correspondence with another Belgian, Monique Claes. The exhibition features her poignant letters to Guylaine Liétaert, where she addresses her struggle with illness, while expressing her joy in creating things and her desire to share her passion for an art that brightens up everyday life.

Exhibition dates: 23 September 2023 to 7 January 2024
Opening on 22 September 2023–19h

mmResidency: Drawing Centre Diepenheim
Eleni Kamma will be an artist-in-residence at the Drawing Centre Diepenheim this fall. The program is funded by The Mondriaan Fund, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
01/09–30/11/2023
During her residency Kamma will relate the activity of drawing to the notion of the garden as a social connector between culture, nature and the individual.
Her residency falls under the umbrella of a larger project, The Corners of the Mouth, which she has been developing since the second half of 2020. Through exercises in affective communication, the project explores and develops participatory nourishing systems between artist, audience-public-participants and the institutions involved. The Corners of the Mouth asks how can we think of cultural institutions, the artist, the participants and the visitors to an exhibition—in essence, the main “ingredients” of an exhibition— as a nourishing system? Under the general umbrella of the project’s title and in collaboration with both institutions and individuals, Kamma focusses on cultivating new forms of artistic expression that strengthen the relation between the “I” and the “we”.

Casting Call (2017-ongoing) is an investigation into the notion of parrhesia—the courage to speak one’s mind — approached from a comedic and excessive perspective through a series of related attempts, events and manifestations. Eleni Kamma employs performative strategies and fictional character-types rooted in popular European practices of entertainment, populist jokes and dark allegories, costumes, props, and excess to playfully ask serious questions about living well together and the role of public space and time in contemporary Europe.
From 17 February to 14 May 2023, Eleni Kamma's project Casting Call (2017-ongoing) comes to Kunsthal Gent in the form of a temporary exhibition amid the Endless Exhibition. In preparation for this, Eleni Kamma was part of Kunsthal Gent's development programme in 2022.

mmI want to break free

The entries in this experimental vocabulary were written in collaboration with multidisciplinary collectives, artists and designers from five continents. They reflect how collective action changes artists’ identity and ways of working, where artists work together with non-artists, make products for their local environment and take on multiple identities, such as researcher, community activist, computer hacker, or business consultant. In these practices and in this vocabulary, boundaries between art, design, research and activism become blurred or dissolve entirely, and no longer conform to a Western concept of art.

nmmStatecraft is an international group exhibition that explores the underlying mechanisms at work in the engineering of the nation-state, as we know it today, and the challenges it faces in today’s globalised, networked world. Probing the history and the processes of nation-building in modern times, Statecraft examines the power structures and processes behind state bureaucracy, governance, and sovereignty, and their common issues of democracy, citizenship, rights, inclusion and exclusion. The exhibition explores the scope and limits of state authority while confronting a new political reality in Europe and beyond, during a time of rising nationalism and authoritarianism, and as some countries become progressively more inward-looking. Featuring 39 artists, Statecraft also looks beyond traditional forms of the nation-state towards alternative models of statehood and political organisation while addressing the current challenges of mass migration, the realities of post- and trans-national structures of organisation, globalisation and technologically enabled nomadism. As the exhibition was being prepared Russia invaded Ukraine, making us painfully aware of the fact that the post-Cold War order has begun unravelling, that democracy and national sovereignty are not to be taken for granted, and that unchecked state power leads to violent and dangerous excesses for humans as well as the environment.
The exhibition prompts us to reflect on the nation-state in the changed circumstances of today, more than 200 years after its conception as an idea. Can we imagine other models of social organisation and statehood that do not require identification with a particular flag or passport? What other forms of belonging and community outside the nation-state might come into fruition? How can we move beyond the toxicity of nationalism while retaining the benefits of the nation-state? Is the concept of ‘global citizenship’, which is gaining currency in light of the need to find shared solutions to shared problems, at all possible or even plausible? The artists in the exhibition critically dissect these issues and questions from a wide perspective. Their work unveils the hidden complexities underlying the contested issues of nation and statehood, compelling us to look at them from unexpected and imaginative angles.

nmm In her work, Eleni Kamma explores the notion of parrhesia, the courage to speak one’s mind, which she approaches from a comedic and excessive perspective. Echoing Pol Bury and André Balthazar's Daily-Bul magazine, Eleni questioned the people of La Louvière about their identity. Who are they? What is La Louvière? Could it be claimed? Could it be written? Could it be worn? Between collective creation and cultural heritage, the people of La Louvière, past and present, find themselves in this collaborative exhibition, defined by a tenuous relationship between surrealist heritage, industrial landscape, working-class history and Carnival in clogs!

Casting Call (2017-ongoing) is a series of related attempts, events and manifestations. The Broken Archive
Eleni Kamma's 2012 solo exhibition From Bank To Bank On A Gradual Slope at Villa Romana, Florence is part of The Broken Archive
nmmThe Broken Archive brings together artistic projects that investigate the history of and present-day life in the Mediterranean region. The archive is “broken” because the region’s cultural wealth is barely perceived anymore. The Mediterranean region has become a buffer zone between the comfort zone of the North and the conflict zone of the South. The archive is also “broken” because the website is designed not as a canonical archive, but as an open, variable, dense network. A variety of artistic projects is organized into twelve cluster terms. These projects are presented with images, texts, PDFs, and films or trailers on the corresponding artists’ pages. Keywords and a search function offer additional orientation and a range of references.
nmm The Broken Archive seeks to create rhizomatic references across the transcontinental Mediterranean region. Artistic works and texts emerge like archipelagos in search of community, resonance, connection. The Broken Archive is a project curated by the Villa Romana team. As a starting point, it brings together the numerous projects that have been carried out here in recent years. The intention is to develop it in a dynamic and interactive manner and offer a common platform to many other artists and projects to come.
nmm The starting point for Kamma's solo exhibition, whose title is taken from a sonnet by Averardo Genovesi from 1838, is the film Georgofili, a 27-minute HD film produced in 2012, for the purposes of which Kamma conducted research during her residency at the Villa Romana as an international visiting artist in 2010 and 2011. Georgofili assembles different 'voices of Italy' throughout the ages. The old genre of Tuscan Contrasto verbal duels, in which the performer-poets Emilio Meliano and Realdo Tonti use their arguing skills to debate the politics and morality of contemporary Italy, is confronted with the historical educational dialogues from the age of enlightened despotism, performed and commented by the young Italian actors Lavinia Parisi and Marco Rustioni.
nmm The exhibition From Bank to Bank on a Gradual Slope stages the premiere of the film among a selection of found objects placed on shelving structures developed specifically for the rooms of the Villa Romana in collaboration with the Belgian architect Breg Horemans. Windows and doors of the main exhibition rooms are projected along their own axis, up to the point where they intersect. These crossing points shape the outline of the flexible and adjustable shelving structures.

Participatory event with Samah Hijawi, Philippine Hoegen, Eleni Kamma, Gosie Vervloessem
Since 2020, life online takes more importance and space/time than ever before. Contemporary communication and collaboration take many new forms, both online and physically.
The Corners of the Mouth focusses on the hybrid life we are living under the current conditions. How can we make use of this hybridity in order to cultivate new forms of artistic expression and to strengthen the relation between the “I” and the “we”?
The Corners of the Mouth explores and develops a participatory system of reciprocal nourishing, between artists, audience and institutions – all involved through exercises in affective communication. How do we cultivate the conditions and the environment for this?
The aim of this first public event of The Corners of the Mouth is to offer perspectives on nourishing through reciprocal relations.
Participants: Samah Hijawi, Philippine Hoegen, Eleni Kamma, Gosie Vervloessem

F.A.R. RADIO
Temporary Radio Station
8–12 December 2020
nmmF.A.R. is an atlas of the city of Athens mapping the evolving economy, the housing market and the various communities living in the city. It's a storytelling action around the present and future of the city and unfolds in three successive independent episodes: A community radio along with an intervention in the outdoor area of 3 137, a series of actions and performances in public spaces of Athens, and finally a group exhibition next fall.
nmm F.A.R. explores the ways in which Athens is inhabited. It stems from the need to understand the different types of transformations that have been taking place in Athens in the past recent years. Despite the economic recession of the last decade and the political instability in the wider Mediterranean region, the city has become a place to be. At the same time, over the last five years, we have seen the local art scene changing; the number of art spaces is growing and venues and initiatives of varying scale are developing.
nmm On December 8th, the program begins with F.A.R. RADIO, a temporary web radio station, broadcasting via our website (www.3137.gr). At the same time, four interventions by Can Altay, Zoe Giambouldaki, Diohandi and Kostis Velonis will be installed outside 3 137, accessible 24/7. The interventions aim to comment on the use and design of public space and reflect on stories of cultural heritage and language.
nmm Invited guests of F.A.R. RADIO are several art initiatives of the city, individuals with a research interest in housing and collective/individual property, as well as employees or owners of small businesses in Exarcheia neighborhood. The guests will develop a 50-minute show—featuring sounds, music and discussion—about their activity, their daily habits, and the city networks within which they engage.
nmm Our aim is to examine how Athens is changing, focusing on the artistic community and its relations with the development of the city and the economy. If artists, consciously or not, are the first ones to occupy and get familiar with run-down locations and neighborhoods then it is intriguing to observe why they choose this city as their place of residence, how they conceive it and how they feel and think about it. The shows will be available online after the end of the project, functioning as an archive of the current time period.
nmm This radio project is a follow-up to Babylon Radio, which was organized by 3 137 in 2014 and to Radio Rhodiola, commissioned by Alserkal Arts Foundation in Dubai in 2019.

Making Matters Symposium
20 & 21 November 2020
Collective Material Practices in Critical Times
Eleni Kamma participates in the second edition of the Making Matters symposium, which will take place on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November 2020 at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam and online.
Collective material practices are now emerging that transgress the classical opposition between theory and practice, or thinking and making. These practices actively engage with our catastrophic times and generate collaborations that connect social, technological, and cultural concerns. They show a potential to develop a comprehensive approach to art, science and technology, driven by the necessity to fundamentally reimagine the relationship of humans to the world.
Confirmed participants: Aliens in Green, Display Distribute, a.pass, Feral Atlas Group, Jatiwangi Art Factory, The Otolith Group, Olu Taiwo, Kate Rich, Garnet Hertz, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Clara Lobregat Balaguer, the work group Material Practices (Leiden University, Willem de Kooning Academy, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Waag Society, West Den Haag and associated researchers)

S.M.A.K. moves: Drawings in Lockdown
October 31, 2020–February 21, 2021
It is visitors that breathe life into a museum. During lockdown, things were extremely quiet, also at S.M.A.K. Everyone was forced into isolation. Drawing is often a solitary activity. For this reason, at the end of March, S.M.A.K. invited as many people as possible to send in drawings. Anyone could participate: young and old, from amateurs to artists. The initiative was a way for the museum to keep in active contact with its visitors during this time of crisis. The numerous drawings that we were privileged to receive paint a compelling and diverse picture of how their makers experienced this remarkable period.
The S.M.A.K. Moves pavilion is a design by Olivier Goethals. A publication designed by Edouard Schneider will complement this presentation.

WELLNESS – Participate, Tend and Befriend!

nmm
October 3, 2020 – May 23, 2021
Our notably increased interest in health and personal well-being is a social phenomenon. In this precarious pandemic era, our efforts for collective health are of great importance. This exhibition presents wellness through the perspective of contemporary art. Together with twelve internationally practicing artists, Kristianstads konsthall investigates whether art can be a strategy and method for well-being.
mm For many of us, wellness is a coveted lifestyle related to happiness and harmony. At the same time, the pursuit of well-being has polarized our society. Wellness can be an engrossing lifestyle with committed followers, enthusiastically sharing a belief in the utopian power of well-being. At the same time, it is a multimillion dollar industry feeding on hope and despair, dubious promises and deep disappointment, at high individual cost.
mm The scope of wellness is growing at a furious pace, rapidly producing new concepts and trends – from forest baths and retreats to age-reducing treatments and special diets. Self-care, internal and external, has for many become a necessity for surviving a hectic everyday life. At the same time, having the motivation, time and money to take care of oneself signals success in today’s society. It can even indicate an individual’s attitude to climate change and politics. This can be expressed through personal choices such as veganism or reducing use of plastics, as well as advocating stronger public health measures, such as shortened working hours.
mm The exhibition invites us to participate, take care and connect! Via various artistic investigations, presentations and techniques, questions are raised such as:
How does contemporary art view the phenomenon of wellness?
Can consumer- and lifestyle criticism affect our way of life?
How does an ongoing pandemic affect wellness?

4th WAB
27 Jan 2020 – 31 Dec 2020
The fourth edition of the Wandering Arts Biennial (WAB) is taking place in 2020.
The WAB is a contemporary arts biennial that focuses on versatile research, production and presentation methods of artists with nomadic practices.
This fourth edition of the WAB returns to the initial aim of the biennial, i.e. to serve as a platform for encounter and exchange for participating artists.
In early 2020, during different gatherings, a number of themes were distilled that connect to the research and practice of participants. These strands will serve as the backdrop for the biennial, offering a focal point to all activities happening.
– different modes of wandering
– artistic ethics of wandering
– ownership / authorship – the collective question
– the institute
– rhythm (past connected to future motor)
The WAB is co-produced by all the participating artists.

TALKS 01
Eleni Kamma will be talking about her ongoing research in the first edition of TALKS, a series of meetings organised by Center for Artistic Sensibilities.
mm31/05/2018, 19:30–21h
mm Live stream via link on Center for Artistic Sensibilities
Center for Artistic Sensibilities invited three guests for the launch of the first edition of the TALKS series. Tine Deboelpaep, Ella de Burca, and Eleni Kamma will be discussing their ongoing research projects in a live Skype meeting. Kamma is currently a PhD Arts candidate at Leiden University and KABK in the Hague. Her research revolves around the notion of 'parrhesia', which implies "not only freedom of speech, but also the obligation to speak the truth for the common good, even at personal risk, by questioning how the notion of entertainment relates to personal expression and public participation." Her artistic practice "develops performative strategies and creates temporary spaces of shared experience, where co-creation may be possible."
mmTALKS is a series of meetings, which can also veer into a debate, a presentation, or a performance. Artists at different stages of their careers are invited to present their works (especially works-in-progress or yet unrealised ideas), to share their doubts and questions, and to exchange feedback in an informal atmosphere.
mmPractical information:
The meeting will take place online, via Skype, and thus the number of places is limited. If you would like to actively join this edition of TALKS, send an email to: centerforartisticsensibilities@gmail.com.
You will be contacted with further instructions on how to join the conversation. TALKS will also be streamed live. To tune into this live streaming, follow the link on Center for Artistic Sensibilities's Facebook account.
All TALKS are held in English.

Art is Always Public
mmAn Artist's Film Each Week

How can we preserve closeness and exchange when the survival motto these days is "social distancing"? With a film programme Villa Romana would like to maintain a form of public and an attention towards artistic productions. In a state of emergency, as we all live it now, together and individually, these can generate forms of friendship, courage and solidarity.
mmEvery Wednesday Villa Romana shares an artist's film online, which has been produced in or around Villa Romana in recent years or was shown here. There are also some new releases!
mmThe programme includes films by Mikhail Karikis, Shannon Bool, Lerato Shadi, Sophie Reinhold, Fide Dayo, Mario Rizzi, Maya Schweizer, Eleni Kamma, Dani Gal, Karolina Bregula, Andrea d'Amore, Alessandra Ferrini, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Eske Schlüters and others.

The Accademy of the Georgofili was founded in Florence in 1757 in order to promote science in favour of agriculture. In Eleni Kamma’s film Georgofili, Italian voices from different times come together: The old genre of the Tuscan contrasto (battle of words), in which the performer-poets Emilio Meliano and Realdo Tonti use their debating skills to discuss the politics and morals of contemporary Italy, meets educational dialogues from the era of enlightened despotism, which are recited and commented on by the young Italian actors Lavinia Parissi and Marco Rustioni.
mmEleni Kamma was born in 1973 in Athens and lives and works in Brussels and Maastricht. In her artistic work, she explores gaps and contradictions within cultural narratives and structures. She reinterprets systems of order, strategies of description and classification and thus investigates the relationship between cliché, banality and stereotype in the formation of history and meaning. Eleni Kamma has been an International Guest Artist at Villa Romana in 2010 and 2011.

In Casting Call: How does a European politician save a refugee from drowning? the exhibits are considered both as hosts, inviting the visitor to experience them, and as testifiers, providing evidence to how the circulation processes in Kamma’s practice — from her as individual artist (through her drawings, where she enacts the Characters of the Parade on paper), to dialectic collaborations (through film and performative events, where the Characters are publicly enacted) and back again —materialize.

a.O. – b.c. An audiovisual diary

Group show with Eleni Kamma at State of Concept, Athens, and Athens School of fine Arts
07/12/2019–01/02/2020
(a.O. - b.c. = after Olympics - before crisis)
mm Fifteen years after the end of the 28th Olympic Games in Athens, Greece has not recovered from the crisis. Traveling back to 2004-2010, a re-visiting through the spectrum of culture reveals a lot about the climate then and now. In September 2004, following the success of the 28th Olympic Games hosted in Athens, Greece was slowly embarking on a - then invisible to the many - economic downturn. It led to the then Prime Minister George Papandreou to announce on April 23, 2010 (ironically the dark anniversary of the Junta dictatorship) that Greece is entering the International Monetary Fund support mechanism, the country entering a long path of austerity.
mm
This exhibition sheds light on a five-year period of rich audio and visual cultural production in the interval between those two events. The prevailing global narrative on Greece at the end of the Olympics was a positive one: the cradle of European thinking, the mother of Western culture, succeeded in organising a highly celebrated aesthetically pleasing event that was viewed by millions all over the world. In just five years Greece would have a completely different profile of the front pages of international press, as a bankrupt country, not civilised enough, in a collapsed financial state due to corruption and over-spending of European grants for decades; a country that over-borrowed but was begging for more money. A country that wanted to deceive the economically stable Northern Europe, with Greeks portrayed as "lazy".
mmThe exhibition attempts to first trace the footprints of this change over the past five years through examples of cultural production of the period, and to contour what kind of climate was prevailing in Athens by the end of the Olympics, but also to look for possible samples of utopian or dystopian representations for a future for Athens and Greece through the narrative of artists, filmmakers, musicians and designers.
mm
The two main pillars on which the exhibition is based on are, to primarily raise the question of art and its relationship to the fetishistic narrative (of both foreign and Greek society) of contemporary Greece as a continuation of its ancient heritage as well as its reflection on the concept of Greekness, and furthermore to unearth the articulation of a new glossary that contoured the cultural production of the period. a.O. - b.c. aims to highlight the efforts traced in cultural production that formed the basis but also the introduction, to the current international interest in Athens in its post-documenta era.
mm
From artistic collectives, curatorial initiatives and independent movements of filmmakers, to music groups with a newfound political discourse and experimentations through new media, cultural production in Athens between 2004-2010 was a nucleus for the redefinition of national identity, sociopolitical concerns, investigations and positioning but also a ground for a new discourse that described local cultural production in new terms in relation to its past but also the global international scene.
mm
The exhibition serves as a sample presentation of a small section of hundreds of examples of initiatives and actions presented at that time, through the memories of the State of Concept curatorial team (Vicky Zioga, Electra Karatza, Maria Adela Konomi, Lydia Markaki and iLiana Fokianaki). ACPA Conference 2019

Eleni Kamma has been invited as guest speaker for the two-day ACPA Conference in The Hague. This year's edition, entitled Is This Thing On? Public Dimensions of Artistic Research, has a main focus on the notion of the 'public' in artistic research.
10–11/10/2019
ACPA Conference 2019: Is This Thing On? Public Dimensions of Artistic Research
The Royal Academy of Art The Hague (KABK) & Royal Conservatoire The Hague (KC)
The first conference day will be hosted by the Royal Academy of Art and the second conference day by Royal Conservatoire.
mm
In artistic research the public can be an integral and active part of the combined project of creating art, knowledge and societal relevance. To what extent do artistic researchers take into account this expanded role of the public in their choice of research approach, methods or forms of dissemination? In some instances, the collaboration and responses of participants become the very material of the research, while in other cases the researcher resists the pressures of the public gaze.
mm
The 2019 ACPA conference provides a platform to explore a range of practices along this public-private spectrum, and to elicit the productive tensions and correspondences between different forms of engagement such as listening, viewing, interacting, and experiencing. It seeks to problematize the notion and condition of publicness and to investigate both actual and potential relations between the artist-researcher and a real or imagined public.

Art Inside Out is offering a residency on the theme “Self-care then and now” in the health resort of Varberg. The residency aims at an artistic activation of the heritage of the health resort, connected to various cultural sites, life stories, objects, and archive material, which also gives an opportunity for reflection about the ways history is written. How has the perception of self-care, health, and well-being evolved from the establishment of the health resort until today? What is the meaning of cultural, psychosocial and socio-economic perspectives for self-care?
Art Inside Out is offering an eight-week residency for three artists during 2019, with the following schedule: April 29–May 12 (research), May 13–June 9 (production), August 26–September 8 (presentation).
At the end of the residency, there will be public presentations of the artistic processes on-site in Varberg municipality as well as other places in Region Halland and Sweden. Various public meetings will occur during the entire residency period.

Jubilee, platform for artistic research and production
Jubilee was first established in 2012 as a dialogue among artists and cultural workers who consider collaboration and artistic research as essential ways of working. Since then, it has evolved into an artist-run platform that provides continuous support for the work of six artists, while hosting other artworkers on a project base instigated by the platform’s collective research. Jubilee’s focus is twofold. First, it is an organisation for the production of the work of the member artists. Since 2015, these are Justin Bennett, Eleni Kamma, Vincent Meessen, Jasper Rigole, and Vermeir & Heiremans. Second, their shared interests lead to collective, performative research projects, involving collaborations with artists, curators, academic researchers and other professionals, art schools, universities and (art) institutions, and focus on the conditions of artistic practice.
For the Jubilee artists, collectivizing and sharing partnerships has been an opportunity to use the benefits of networks, visibility and other resources, while alleviating the responsibilities of fundraising, bookkeeping and legal costs. But Jubilee remains in the first place a platform for content exchange and discussion. Together, the artists constitute Jubilee’s collective artistic direction. Within their practices, Jubilee’s member artists work in diverse media and on a variety of topics, but always on a basis of collaborative research that brings in transversal knowledge from a wide range of perspectives. —

mmThe National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) presents 39 New Acquisitions by 33 artists that were included in the Museum’s collection from 2014 to 2017. A year after the partial operation of the Museum and the opening of its temporary exhibition spaces, the first selection of its New Acquisitions (2014 – 2017) marks the enrichment of the collection and the beginning of a new dialogue with the greater cultural and artistic production inside and outside EMST and brings the Museum closer to the opening of its permanent collection spaces.
EMST, along with its intensive activity in Greece and abroad and the resolution of administrative issues that will soon lead it to the complete opening of its spaces, has expanded its collection by 150 works, reaching the total number of 1150. With long-term loans, generous donations and some acquisitions, the EMST Collection completes its existing sections with news axes and new topics. In this way the Museum “opens” its door to synergies with other international Museums, in the framework of the series EMST in the World, which for a year now has designated the Museum’s intention for extraversion and constant expansion of its “borders”, counting two exhibitions already, as well as with other individual activities.
Movement, forced and violent, fear, humanitarian, social and economic crisis that urges alternative ways of dealing and managing them internally and collectively are themes which the works presented in the exhibition deal with, having a dialectical relationship with what happens in the difficult times we live in.
mmTransculturality and interaction with the audience were and always will be aspects of an “open” museum, transforming it into a living organization, a platform for culture, dialogue, research and production, as well as of experiential knowledge and entertainment. It regards a constant redefinition of the role of a Museum of contemporary art and a constant dialogue with its era and its audience.
mmAt the same time, at the temporary exhibition space of the Museum on the Ground Floor, the interactive art project Face Forward … into my home, that was inaugurated a few days ago, is presented. The project is realized in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and funded by the European Commission.
mmThe necessity of the social role of the Museum and its active participation in top humanitarian and social issues, such as the one with the refugees, converse in many ways with the works of the Museum’s collection.
EMST overcomes obstacles with the assistance of the State, artists, donors, friends and its audience and it is a living example of the actualization of optimism, with its decisive turn towards the world.

mmmDwell, Act, Transform
2–17 November 2017
The exhibition Dwell, Act, Transform shows artistic research trajectories conducted by the research groups of Minerva Art Academy within the Bachelors, Masters and PhD. Artistic research is a relatively new form of research which uses the attitude and working methods of artists and designers during the research process.
The artistic research projects in the north as 'making' practices are always connected to the social and material environment in which the research is taking place. Anthropologist Tim Ingold calls this a position of dwell. From this position the transformative power of artistic action applies to both the maker and the environment. Growing into the world, the world grows in them.

Initiated by Woodstone Kugelblitz
In TAKE OVER hierarchy is way out, the Anonymous Group of Artists is in constant transition. Constantly there will be a take over, no-one is in control. The audience is invited to participate. Because people take over from each other it is unclear who made the products.
As tools there will be machines with different printing techniques and each with their specific limitations like old stencil machines, Gestetners, cash-printers, a copier a.o.
The activities are all related to the philosophy of Woodstone Kugelblitz.

mmTerra Mediterranea: In Action

An exhibition of contemporary art, a conference and a series of parallel actions
Exhibition Opening: 7 April 2017, 20:00
Pafos2017, European Capital of Culture presents in Nicosia and in Pafos Terra Mediterranea: In Action, a project that includes a major contemporary art exhibition, an international conference and a series of parallel actions with the participation of a great number of artists from Cyprus and abroad. The project is organised by the Pierides Foundation and the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) and is curated by Dr Yiannis Toumazis.
Terra Mediterranea: In Action aims at detecting, investigating and presenting the reflections of contemporary artists on today’s universal landscape of economic, political, religious, social, but also deeply existential crisis of identity, especially as viewed through “Mediterranean” eyes, from both a political and a poetic stance.
The tragedies currently taking place in the Mediterranean Basin bring again to the fore the importance of this enclosed sea, which may be characterised as a “liquid continent” that is an extremely political and politicised space. One could also argue that the Mediterranean is for Europe the “irrational underbelly that brings disorder, border breaching, colonial phantoms, and an uncanny claim to a common, mythically glorious, ancient past.” [rivistapolitics.wordpress.com]. Today, this multifaceted and complicated entity, for years marginalised in western eyes as an orientalist haven of corruption and backwardness, has become an obvious and unavoidable focus of political action.
In particular, the Terra Mediterranea: In Action exhibition intends to illustrate how, in this era of globalisation and the increased visibility of “peripheral” artistic activity, contemporary artists from the Mediterranean region and the international art scene negotiate issues of history, memory and politics. The exhibition includes a variety of presentational formats such as visual works, performances, theoretical discussions, film screenings, talks, literature and poetry readings, public interventions and educational programmes.
A different version of the project was organised and presented in collaboration with Halle 14 in Leipzig, in September 2016, co-curated by Yiannis Toumazis and Michael Arzt.

mmWhy relooking at caricature today?

Caricature is a satirical reaction to and a comment upon reality, it cannot exist without referring to a certain thing, person, situation that pre-exists.
My research proposal for A/R will evolve around the form of representation of a body that has to do with excess, simulacrum, grotesque and its potential to link to and trace the social today.

Every year, a large number of international artists are invited to the Villa Romana in Florence. Villa Romana Fellows live in Florence for ten months, while invited guest artists either stay in the city for several months or spend a few days there for an exhibition. Over the years, many of them have also filmed in the city and the region. We will be showing a selection of these films in cooperation with the Fondazione Architetti (FAF) on 16 March at the Palazzina Reale, which was built by Giovanni Michelucci in 1935.

The first evening's seven films focus on various historical, political and social contexts and questions of artistic narration. However, the films also show that Florence and the IN SITU environment continue to be a place of international artistic production.

The second part of the program, OUT OF PLACE, concerns reflections of urban realities and architectural storage spaces around the world. New films by Loretta Fahrenholz and Clemens von Wedemeyer will be presented for the first time in Italy. These two artists, like Nico Joana Weber and Ei Arakawa, have lived and worked in Florence as Villa Romana Fellows.

mmWe, people in transition
group exhibition
at Research Centre Art & Society at Platform Minerva,Groningen
28/10 - 9/11/2016
Opening: Friday 28 October, from 15:00 - 17.30.
The exhibition We,people in transition shows a selection of the projects which the research group Image in Context carried out during the past four years. The title of the exhibition emphasizes how not only our environment is in transition, but how we people are as well. The visual encounters in this exhibition, have not only recorded this transition, they also caused it. We, people in transition is open from 28 October to 9 November 2016 in Platform Minerva (Praediniussingel 59, Groningen).
The exhibition demonstrates how artists, together with other people, redefine both their artistry and the context in which we function. The artist's contribution – with his open vision, his questioning attitude and the power to connect people – is very important in bringing about a different way of looking, at each other and at our environment.

The Mediterranean Sea and its coasts create a »liquid« continent that has been shaped since time immemorial by the exchange of people, goods and knowledge. Disparaged by the West as backwards and corrupt, it has moved into the focus of world events through the Arab Spring, as well as civil wars and banking and governmental crises.
This exhibition looks at this turbulent phase through over 20 critical and poetic artistic perspectives on »Terra Mediterranea«, investigating instead the dividing, the connecting.
In cooperation with the NiMAC - Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre in Cyprus.
With an extensive program of events, HALLE 14 presents the exhibition from September 17 to November 20, 2016.

mmIndiscipline
Festival at Palais de Tokyo, Paris
03.09. – 04.09.2016
From noon until midnight
Opening Saturday, September 3rd at 11am
Brussels, the multifaceted and interdisciplinary capital, comes to light at the Palais de Tokyo.
Over the weekend of September 3 & 4, 2016, more than 30 artists, comprising visual artists, performers, choreographers and video makers based in Brussels, will be invited to the Palais de Tokyo by Indiscipline, selected by a curatorial team of WIELS (Brussels' contemporary art centre) , Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Performing Arts Festival) and the Wallonie-Bruxelles Théâtre/Danse agency. Coming from around 15 different countries, these artists will present works from diverse crossover disciplines, pushing a number of our symbolic, physical, cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Within the space of a few years, Brussels has turned into an international platform dedicated to emerging artists and to artistic experimentation. Artists from all around the world gather there to find a breeding ground in which to showcase their talents. Characterized by their artistic risks, local artists don’t seem to share any common ground, other than their undisciplined nature and their interdisciplinary bias.

mm“CO-ACTION”
Nida Doctoral School session with Eleni Kamma
Vilnius Academy of Arts (VAA) and Aalto University School of Arts
Nida Art Colony, Neringa,Lithuania
22.08. – 28.08.2016
one-week courses featuring seven lecturers, academics and selected doctoral students who will reflect on the value of artist placements in non-arts organisations such as business, political and science bodies.
The idea of the “CO-ACTION” 2016 summer course is to examine the value of artists’ placements in non-arts organisations, such as business, political and science bodies. This idea rests on the assumption that representatives of creative professions (such as artists, curators, architects, designers) are no longer romantic lonely creators. In order to design a viable way to organise such placements where artists would work in non-arts fields, this course aims to discuss and research various contemporary art practices that have been engaged in similar activity. “CO-ACTION” is mainly inspired by the British artists’ collective Artist Placement Group (APG), founded by Barbara Steveni and John Latham. APG claimed that the role of the artists in 1970’s society was limited to aesthetic problems, and APG’s purpose was to expand this role.
We are planning to ask the following questions in the upcoming course: what might follow if we as artists and researchers take up the role of the ‘social visionary’, as suggested by Olinde Rodrigues in 1825¹. Such roles are often used in financial and management consultancy services to perform creatively and successfully, so might it also be a way for the arts to adapt themselves to the current system of production? What are the dangers and motives of resistance within such systems? What are the methods used by social visionaries and how do they overlap with the modes of production in creative industries?

group exhibition
LOOP Festival, Barcelona
Venue: Reial Cercle Artístic
Carrer Arcs, 5, 08002, Barcelona
26/05 - 10/06/2016
Without Pause, Dialogues is an exhibition project made up of a dozen perspectives that establish six common lines of research. It is built around two determining factors: a formal one, which is concerned with matters unrelated to the work itself, and a conceptual one, which emerges from the desire for dialogue between the works in the form of diptychs (two adjacent screens). The dialogue fostered by the diptychs reinforces and highlights the contents of each one of the projects, thus creating a feedback loop between them.Artists: Maria Ruido, Sarah Vanagt & Katrien Vermeire, Ria Pacquée, Lúa Coderch, Patricia Dauder, Elias Heuninck, Jordi Colomer, Eleni Kamma, Jordi Cané & Lisa Bause, Pieter Geenen, Raquel Friera and Els Opsomer.

mmSound of Silence
Sounding City is an annual exhibition that explores sound art and the boundaries between art, sound and music. The various installations bring together the three different disciplines. Tangible sound. Audible image. Sound of Silence focuses on quiet or barely audible sound work by sound artists. There is increased attention for silence in our society. In the bustle of today’s city, there is more than ever a need for quietude. Yet silence is also the benchmark against which sound is measured. No matter how paradoxical it may sound: silence and sound cannot exist without one another. Many sound artists share this fascination and create installations on the fringes of the audible. As a reflection on sound or as an invitation to more intense listening. Sound of Silence mixes works of both Flemish and internationally renowned artists, and starts with an opening performance and a concert on the same theme.

Eleni Kamma participates in Breaking Crisis, the film program of Transmediale Berlin.
Under the name Conversation Piece, transmediale reboots the format of the post-digital culture event, creating a transitory space for discussion of the anxieties of late capitalism. Rather than a single-themed festival with separate exhibition and program sections, artistic and research practice will unfold live through discussions, workshops, temporary installations, performances, and various hybrid formats. Through the thematic streams that function as conversation starters, Anxious to Act, Anxious to Make, Anxious to Share, and Anxious to Secure, the Conversation Piece creates an occasion to reflect upon past transmediale themes while resolutely focusing on the ambiguity of present digital culture.

Yar bana bir eğlence. Notes on Parrhesia, Eleni Kamma, BE/NL 2015, 37'
The transformation of Western industrial society into a service and information economy is coupled with the unrestricted subjugation of the environment to market imperatives. Financial transactions are executed by computer programs in milliseconds: money makes money. The unequal distribution of wealth and security, evidenced in global refugee movements, produces a sense of permanent crisis. Conversely, new forms of solidarity, resistance, and struggles for democratic rights and economic participation are emerging. Against the background of these volatile developments, this film selection presents an impressive range of artistic and critical analyses of the present.

mmL’INTRU (INVADERS)
is a multidisciplinary exhibition and performance program that deals with issues of post-colonialism, memory, identity and narration.

Gathering together artists originally from Portugal, England, Rwanda, Greece, Germany, Argentine, Hungary, Spain, Serbia, Poland and Taiwan, who work in performance, object, photography, video and installation, L’INTRU aims to question these potent issues: postcolonialism, personal and collective memory, narration and identity. It not only asks who the invaders are, it also speaks of the personal narratives that these forces provoke within the individual. After a successful run in Vienna, the exhibition is being brought to London with the intention of engaging with local issues: capitalism, gentrification and the cuts. Join us for a packed performance program, on the front row will be some of the most prominent London artists.
